Brightfield versus darkfield microscope: what is the difference?

A darkfield microscope works like a brightfield microscope but uses an annular aperture to direct light at a high angle. Most light misses the objective, so the background appears dark. Only scattered light from sample features enters the lens, making those features appear bright against a dark background.
