Works great, simple to use
I dislike wearing headphones. And these days with hours of meetings I was looking for an external mic which didn't sound like I was talking from a cave. I tried a couple of other mics and they didn't fit the bill. This one is extremely good. This microphone is clearly geared to be used on phones and with cameras as seen from the photo on the box. It comes very nicely packaged. Contains the microphone with the wind cover, a mini tripod, a stand to hold a phone and a red grip to attach the mic to the tripod. It comes with two cables with 3.5mm plugs. One to connect to a phone and the other to a camera.I had a tough time attaching the red grip to the mount. I was afraid I was going to break something trying to snap it into the mic. But I managed to snap it into place without breaking anything. I first tested it with the phone since that was easier. Didn't work. I then realized that I was using the camera cable. Switched to the other cable. Still didn't work. Then I looked at the tags on the cable. One end is labeled microphone and the other end has a phone label. Plugged the microphone end into the mic and it started working. This needs to be documented. Down the road if/when the labels come off, it would be difficult to determine which end goes where. Some color tagging would help. The right angle end goes into the mic. The camera cable has right angles on both ends. And as expected, either end works irrespective of the tag. Also, the microphone end has one ring. The phone end has two rings. But the phone was not the reason why I bought this. I wanted to test it on my laptop (HP Elitebook 840 G5). It has a composite headphone/mic. I connected the phone cable to the jack taking care of the right end. It didn't work. I switched to the camera cable. No luck. I had previously purchased a splitter (not allowed to specify url apparently). At the time, it hadn't worked. Tried it with the splitter. Still didn't work. I downloaded HP Support Assistant and updated the Conexant HD Audio driver. Rebooted and bingo. So the mic with the splitter worked with the updated drivers.Spent the day on various calls on WebEx and Teams. The sound quality was very good on the other side. I placed the mic about 3 ft away (closer to the laptop because of the cable length) and there was no problem with the audio. Brought it about a ft away (had to use an extention cable) and the sound was slightly better but not required. With the Plantronics headset I was using, I was unable to turn on the floor fan without people complaining about the wind noise. I turned on the fan and unless I had mentioned it, people on the other end said they would not have noticed it. Only when I turned it on to max, was there wind sound. But even then I was told it wasn't bad.Exactly what I was looking for. Finally comfortable meetings. Just for that 5 stars. But if Amazon would have allowed half stars, I would have deducted half a star for documentation and not including a splitter. Also, a longer cable for PCs would be good. But I had the splitter and extension cable already. I tested the mic with my desktop with a dedicated microphone jack and it worked perfectly.
