You do not need a cell phone to use them as an intercom. Pairing the bluetooth helmet headset with a cell phone will let you make phone calls , listen to music, or preview the shooting screen.

Can I plug in my own headphones?

Yes, As long as your headphones have a micro USB interface, it’s fine.

This works on a half helmet?
A
It can work quite well on a half helmet, but beware that as the CVC noise filtering is, if you don't have a windscreen and wearing a half helmet you might still get some noise in calls. Otherwise all good!

How is the sound quality for listening to music? Substantially better than cheaper brands? Just want music while riding with a full-face helmet.

Music is clear and the quality is worth the money. We listen to music and talk via bluetooth while riding.

Does it work with bluetooth headsets of other brands like Sena?

YES, all devices with bluetooth function

I understand that you can intercom with other riders and share music with bluetooth but can each rider listen to their own music while in "chat"?

No, music only or intercom only.
