How long does it take to give a reading?

I can't tell the exact time but it's really fast. Press the button and it shows the result almost immediately. Measuring the speed will take a longer time, for about 2s.

I check the manual and it said you can choose from feet, yard, and meter.

Works well,put it against golf cart gps and is accurate, does a great job

Absolutely! My son is 11 years old and he's exactly into it and I guess your boy will love it, too. I also used it as a tool during my outdoor activities. Don't worry.
