Quick set up with solid controls and range
Have been using this for a week now with good results overall and a few things that could be improved. Overall solid and easy solution to keep an eye on a baby with a dedicated viewing tablet so your mobile/tablet can go back to doing other things.SetupOut of the box, takes all of 2 min to get set up; plug the interchangeable power adapter to camera and viewing tablet, power on tablet and you're up and running in no time. Note to put them apart so you don't get a feedback loop with the audio. This is a common pain point with all monitor systems.RangeCamera works on direct RF connection with the tablet so there is no app or wifi sharing; this is a good thing if you're concerned about yet another company having your wifi credential and security concerns that comes with that. Range is really good, was able to walk about 150+ ft away from the house and still maintained connection. Should not be an issue under normal usage conditions; monitor up/down stairs, from the yard, etc. For reference, my wifi range drops before this does.PicturePicture is clear at 720P and usable with the display unit, although 1080P might be just a tad sharper but the picture detail is limited to the display size so 720P is a good match and for primary purposes of keeping an eye on a baby this should be fine. Nice functionality to see temp in the camera room too. Pan and tilt work great so far and the tilt has good angles, was able to put on a shelf and tilt down far enough to see into the crib. Haven't tried inverting or wall mounting to see if the picture auto adjusts for direction.I've used 480/720/1080 IP cams for monitoring duty, 480 was fine to see general detail and movement, 720 was much sharper, and 1080 just allowed for more zoom on a mobile phone. The resolution makes much more difference on an IP cam as you could cast the camera video to a TV display and now the extra detail is more valuable. IP cams are a whole different ball game with more complex setup and security risks but more flexible use case scenarios of course, record, playback, etc.AudioAudio pickup is on par, and it's just as loud as a regular audio monitor and the display does include a mic for a 2 way conversation or shushing in the middle of night.Tablet displayViewing angles are fine but not the greatest compared to using a top end mobile phone/tablet as a display. it does come with a kickstand and the battery does seem to last for hours as needed. Controls are intuitive enough to set temp C/F, adjust brightness, volume, and even manage multiple camera's. Would be nice if the buttons lit up when you're checking on things in the dark.EnhancementsHigher res camera and display would be welcomed along with backlit buttons. The other item would be the power ports, would be great to have native micro usb ports on both so you could power from battery packs on the go. Right now, a quick visit to family or friends where the little one goes down for a nap requires finding a nearby outlet to plug in the camera, the display can run on battery. I ordered a USB to 3.5x1.35mm barrel port cable to see if i could power the camera from a battery pack. Will see if this works and enhances the use case scenario. The ease of setup would be enhanced and make the package easily portable for travel.CompetitionThis is a dedicated video unit vs. rolling your own solution with IP camera (Nest, Arlo, Amcrest, Foscam, etc.). I started with Foscam 480P cameras with a dedicated app; the whole thing is more flexible with motion detect and remote access but presents an inherent network security risk. Rolling my own DVR with a pc was next and became more secure with recording options. Takes a good bit of research and investment (dedicated PC, hard drives, etc.) to set up for general purpose/security use and overkill if all you want is a decent clear picture of the baby with sound both ways. If you want to eventually transition your video equipment to general purpose use, an IP cam system will have more legs in the long run but if you want simple video and range this can't be beat.EditCamera does not adjust for wall or inverted mounting, picture on monitor just stays in original orientation. Did receive a 3.5mm x 1.35mm to usb cable and it's working fine with one of many USB battery packs i have laying around, now we have a truly portable solution! Hmm wonder if i can find a clamp of some sorts too to make it a clip on arrangement with portable usb power.
