My son has had a monocular for over 10 years now and loves it. He has taken it on every vacation (26 mile hike down Haleakala), on all of his camping trips (Eagle Scout) and most recently with him on his tour with the Peace Corp (I was glad to see it return with him)! When he was young, he would always take great care with it and let the rest of us borrow it on occasion. Before I bought this monocular, I looked at a number of review sites because there were a lot in the same prices range. I found this on Monocular Reviews: Best Monoculars for the Money - Telescope Observer. I bought this Monocular as a gift for my nephew who is about the same age my son was when he first received his. I expect my nephew to use it a lot at sports events, in their yard, hiking and on vacations.My son and I took it out and compared it to his as well as our own expectations. The scope is good and seems to punch a good pack for the money. I like its compact size and I feel he will easily slip it in his pocket. It also won't add a lot of weight when he goes hiking/camping. My son's was more expensive so it was mostly saved for "events." The only drawback I see it that it feels a bit lightweight - so I hope that my sister does not feel it was very inexpensive. That said, being lightweight and not feeling too expensive will encourage him to use it and my sister won't restrict him from taking it out of the house which is what I was after.

The telescope is amazing. My fiancé has been wanting a telescope for awhile and absolutely loves this as a starter. It’s easy to use, easy to assemble, and amazing view of the moon & stars

Overall, this is a good quality handheld telescope. It fits well in your hand, and is easy to operate. I find this unit works best when mounted to a tripod, otherwise the field of view is very unstable, due to your hand shaking. I really like the feature where you can attach your smartphone, however, there is one flaw that I would like to point out. After you've put your smartphone into the bracket and are ready to mount it to the telescope, the mounting attachment works by friction around the eyepiece. This means that you essentially press a ring over the eyepiece. Once attached to the telescope, if you're not careful, your smartphone could easily fall, because of this mounting method. I don't know if other telescopes use the same method, but I feel this design could be improved. Otherwise, a decent handheld.

We bought our 9 year old a telescope for Christmas and this book is not only educational but interesting too. The whole family has enjoyed both the book and family friendly telescope.
