A big upgrade from my thrift shop special
Ah, the camera tripod - boon and bane of the landscape photographer. I had been shooting with a rather aged Sears tripod that I picked up in a thrift shop for a few bucks, but I wanted something sturdier and more compact for a trip out west. It was indeed compact enough to stuff into my checked bag, and then into my 25L day-hike backpack, and it was also light enough that I didn't really feel it too badly whenever I took it along. When set up, it's a reasonable height for me, but I'm on the short side of average...if you're taller, I'd look for something that can extend higher. I will say that it's vastly more solid than the cheapo tripod I had been using. I really like the ball head; it helps me dial in the angle I want with minimal effort, and I can take portrait-orientation photos with it as well.
All in all, this is a good travel/hobbyist tripod. It was nice to have on this summer's travels, and it's continuing to be useful on my photo excursions more locally.
