Five ND filters in one. Excellent optical and constructive quality.
The Mini 5 Pro camera has been completely redesigned compared to the previous models of the series and therefore it was immediately necessary for me to search for new filters specially created for this new drone model. For those who don't know, on this type of device, ND (Neutral Density) filters are an almost indispensable accessory to compensate for the fixed focal aperture of the lens. They are therefore not used to create special effects or work on shades of color, but they act roughly like sunglasses to obtain, among other things, more cinematic video footage. An even more important aspect if we consider that almost certainly through a drone you are going to create videos with many changes of direction and orientation and, consequently, also of light. The solution has always been to prepare multiple filters, to be attached and removed from the drone's camera head for every use and need. All in all, a simple operation, but which in certain environments or situations can still be slightly laborious and in any case risks making us miss the ideal moment for a shot or a shot. So here is the solution, as far as I know at the moment, unique, of this filter that guarantees, with the sole adjustment of the serrated metal ring, the range from five to nine stops. Without going into details, the acronym ND32 means exactly “Neutral Density - two raised to the fifth”, that is thirty-two. As a result, we will have five filters in one, 2^5=32, 2^6=64, 128, 256, and 512. The higher the final number, the stronger the “darkening” effect will be: in fact, only a quantity of light equal to the reciprocal of the indicated value will pass (for example, for the ND32/5 stop, only thirty-second of the light that hits the filter will pass). The additional advantage of this solution is that, since the ring is totally free, it is possible to set even intermediate shades in total freedom and at will. The only relative criticism that can be directed to this product is that the brightest level is already dark enough, namely the ND32. In general, in overcast situations or in any case in case of dim ambient light, light filters such as ND8 and ND16 (3 and 4 stops respectively) are used, which this accessory does not offer. Basically, ease of use, smaller dimensions and greater freedom in configuration: advantages that should not be underestimated at all. Let's now talk about the build quality of the filter. The black plastic part is of excellent quality and attaches perfectly and very firmly to the optical group of the Mini 5 Pro. The knurled ring allows easy alignment to the desired value without any effort and with maximum precision. If you want, to do a test, you can bring the filter in front of the pupil of one eye and look through it. By turning the ring, you will realize, literally with your own eyes, how it works and how it works optimally. I have no objection to the quality of the lens, it behaves perfectly without distortions or chromatic alterations, of course with the exception of the darkening effect. As a last structural aspect, I inserted a photo showing the filter mounted on the lens with the plastic protector inserted on the drone. The two elements do not come into contact in any way and therefore there is no way that they can damage or ruin each other. The overall final evaluation of this filter is the natural consequence of these reflections. An excellent accessory from all points of view. Last but not least, the price is certainly lower than that of a set of five distinct filters with fixed gradation. Five stars with well-deserved praise.
