Not willing to test that theory
Some photographers will say that UV filters are a waste of money but I'm not willing to test that theory. I recently made a trip to the Pacific Northwest and while on the beaches of Olympic Park I had a freak accident. While taking pictures, on a particularly windy day, a way crashed against the rocks I was standing next to. Enough of the small rocks kick up and hit the lens squarely. The UV filter spider web with a perfectly small rock size dent in the middle of it. The underlying lens was perfectly fine! I don't know if the lens would have been fine without this UV filter on it or not. But with a $2k lens, I'm glad I didn't have to test that theory.
