I’ve been a fan of K&F Filters for sometime now, and have come to appreciate the consistency and the quality of the brand. The majority of my lenses live their lives with K&F UV protective filters on their front element.

Like many others, as the quality of mobile phone imagery and videography have improved to levels of near professional quality, I’ve begun to concentrate more energy into taking advantage of those attributes, not to mention their portability.

And as with others, or at least in the case of the iPhone Pro Max phones that I use, have found their unavoidable in-camera sharpening to create imagery, both still and video, that are unrealistic to the senses, with processing that is too apparent, often denigrating the emotional character of the user’s intent.

There are many ways to compensate for this effect, but one the simplest and most expedient is by putting a diffusion filter, such as the K&F Black Mist diffuser, in front of the lens. Doing so is believed to create a more cinematic, analogue (as in film) effect. Imagery that creates a more natural emotional experience for the viewer and more closely matches how they view the world through their own eyes.

And such is the usefulness of the K&F Concept Nano-K series of Black Diffusion filters, and in this case, in ½ mist strength. The larger the number, the greater the diffusing effect.

Using a spot meter and a neutral grey card, I find that the ½ Mist diffuser absorbs about 7/10 of a stop of the light passing through it. For me, ½ diffusion is pretty subtle, and that’s what I want it to be; you don’t want to go from one extreme to another. Just enough to take the edge off of the in-camera processing, and ½ strength is what I consider a good strength to that end.

As I noted at the beginning, I’ve come to rely on the quality of K&F filters, and for the reasons that the seller asserts, but most importantly to me, the use of high quality, multi-coated, anti-reflective glass. Putting low quality glass in front of a high-quality lens denigrates the lens quality to that of the filter in front of it. That is why I have confidence in K&F filters.

Along with the filter is supplied a useful protective case and three cleaning clothes.

I’ve included two pictures of a pasta box so that the reader may judge the degree of the ½ Mist Black Diffusion filters effect. One is without diffusion, the other with.
