This clamp allowed me to ditch the suction cup for my action camera
I've been using a suction cup style mount for my action camera to do timelapses in my backyard. It works okay, but there were multiple occasions where the mount didn't stick properly and ruined a potentially good timelapse. Especially when it's rainy outside and the surfaces are wet. So I got this clamp mount to see if it could work better, and it really solved the problem for good. Sure, my mounting spot has changed since I now need to mount it on a bar instead of a flat surface, but in all honesty this method probably gave me more options when I look around my backyard, considering there's a fence going all around the yard and I can mount the camera on any spot along it.
The magic arm part is made out of aluminum alloy, while the ball heads and the clamp itself seem to be some sort of plastic material. In order to test things out, I mounted my old DSLR on it at a 90 degree angle parallel to the ground, which is probably the toughest challenge I can throw at it, and left it like that for more than 24 hours. When I came back, it was exactly as I left it. This is mounted on a stationary bar, not something that moves like a motorcycle, but still, an action camera clamp holding up a DSLR says a lot about its quality.
Even though the clamp held both my DSLR and my action camera without issues, the magic arm part seems to be on the smaller side compared to the clamp itself. This could be a positive if you're trying to have less bulk on a moving vehicle, but it also probably limits how much weight you can mount on it. I've never reached the weight limits of the magic arm so I'm not sure if this affects anything, but so far it's carried whatever I threw at it without issues.
It also comes with a silicone adapter that lets you mount the clamp on poles with smaller diameters, and it works for that purpose, but I've probably already lost it. I generally don't like loose parts and accessories because they're prone to getting lost, so to me if a product has loose parts, it also needs a carrying solution. Maybe it's just me, but without a proper way to keep accessories like these with the unit, they always end up missing. If you're going to use this mount as a single purpose device, meaning you're always going to use it on the same size pole, this is probably not an issue. I plan to use this clamp mount on various surfaces with different diameters, so even though it's nice that it comes with the silicone adapter, I wish they'd come up with a better solution to store it. Either a carrying pouch for the silicone adapter, or even better, a redesigned clamp with a wider range of mounting capabilities without needing the silicone adapter at all. Not necessarily a complaint, more like a suggestion for future versions.
It's a 5-star product that I'd feel comfortable suggesting to a friend without hesitation. Well made, well executed, with a reasonable price tag, like most things I've gotten from K&F.
