Beautiful star effect without optical distortions.
After my initial trials with the 4-point star filter from K&F Concept—the first one I tested—I was already somewhat undecided as to whether I would give it a full five stars. As far as my personal taste is concerned, this filter unfortunately cannot compete with a beautiful, multi-pointed starburst created by the lens aperture itself. Furthermore, with every light source, the filter produces a certain "aura" effect—much like what one expects from a mist filter. The 6-point star filter tested here performs noticeably better in a direct comparison; while the mist effect is still unmistakable, it remains a compromise.
To be fair, however, it must be acknowledged that with most lenses, you can only achieve a beautiful aperture-generated starburst by stopping down the aperture significantly. This isn't always possible, nor is it always desirable. With this filter—provided all other parameters are right—you can achieve a starburst even at wide-open apertures. To do so, the light source must be bright and, ideally, as small as possible. Unlike the rays produced by my lens's aperture, the rays generated by this filter appear noticeably wider. Another striking observation was that, given identical settings, the rays produced by the 6-point filter are shorter than those produced by the 4-point filter. It is perhaps an interesting fact that the effect appears to be more concentrated when fewer rays are involved.
Notably, there is no "prism effect" here—no colorful fanning-out of the rays like a rainbow. The actual color of the light source is preserved exceptionally well. I think this is a great feature, as the lack of such preservation has often bothered me significantly with other star filters. Since the filter glass rotates independently of the mounting thread, the starburst rays can be aligned exactly as desired.
As is typical for K&F filters, the build quality is absolutely impressive. The threads engage smoothly when screwing the filter onto the lens, and the glass rotates easily—though not *too* loosely. The filter comes in a practical plastic case and includes three of K&F's signature individually sealed cleaning cloths.
Given the quite reasonable price point, this is a lovely solution for anyone who is looking for exactly... Search for this effect
My Rating: 5 Stars – A perfect product, or at least almost
Transparency: I received this item free of charge for product testing purposes. However, this has not influenced my rating. My review is just as honest and critical as it is for items I have purchased myself. I did not conduct a professional product test here; rather, I am reviewing the product as a regular consumer.
