How To Wire Outdoor Camera?
Mounting security cameras outdoors without nearby outlets leaves you with two main wiring approaches: Power over Ethernet (PoE) or drilling a hole through the wall to reach an indoor outlet. PoE is widely regarded as the preferred method because power is included in the ethernet wire you're already running, and you just need a small PoE switch or some inline adapters to add the power to the lines. This frees you to mount the cameras literally anywhere you want since you don't need a nearby power source. If you've already purchased cameras that don't support PoE, drilling through the wall and sealing it is a perfectly valid method and is what's done by virtually every cable and internet installer.
IP Camera Systems vs. HD Over Coax Systems
Before running any wire, identify which type of wired security camera system you have, as the cabling requirements differ significantly.
- IP Camera Systems (PoE)
- You will use Cat5/6 cables when wiring your security camera system. IP security camera systems with up to 16 cameras offer built-in Power over Ethernet (PoE), so one ethernet cable per camera is required. An ethernet cable contains eight insulated copper wires split up into four pairs. With each pair, the wires are twisted around each other over the length of the cable in order to reduce signal interference. These wires are referred to as twisted pairs.
- HD Over Coax Systems
- Coaxial cables are a traditional choice for analog security camera systems and usually form part of a 3-wire system, which includes separate cables for video, power, and audio. They come in two common types: RG59 and RG6. RG59 is ideal for short to medium-distance runs, typically up to 150 meters (500 feet). RG6 is designed for longer-distance transmission, reaching up to 200 meters (656 feet), typically used in larger installations that require greater range and reliability. Keep in mind that a PoE system runs on ethernet — if your cameras run on coax and power married cables and you upgrade to PoE, you will need to run new cables to those locations.

Essential Tools and Materials
To begin, gather the right tools and materials before you start. Here is a list to get you started:
- PoE cameras: These cameras require only one ethernet cable for both data and power, making installation simpler.
- Ethernet cables: Choose solid Cat5e or Cat6 cables that are outdoor-rated. These are durable and can handle harsh weather.
- Conduit piping: Use PVC or metal conduit to protect cables. This is especially useful for underground runs.
- Cable staples and clips: Secure cables along walls and eaves with rubber-coated staples and plastic clips.
- Surge protector: Keep your equipment safe from power surges by connecting your PoE switch or NVR to a surge protector.
- Crimping tool and RJ-45 connectors: Needed for making Cat5/6 patch cables and terminating ethernet runs.
- Silicone sealant or duct seal putty: Used to weatherproof entry holes. Duct seal putty is preferred over caulk as you won't have to redo it in a few years like you probably will with caulk.
- Fiberglass rod: Used to fish cable through wall cavities.
- Stud finder and power finder: To avoid drilling into studs, power lines, or water pipes.

Planning the Wire Routing Path
A well-thought-out path can save you time and prevent headaches later. Measure the distance from each camera to your PoE switch or NVR to determine the cable lengths needed. Make sure to have an extra few feet on each side of the cables so you can allow room for cable termination and reorganization if needed. It is never a bad idea to label the ends so you know which camera is for each.
- Entry and exit points: Decide where the wires will enter and exit your home. Basements or attics are often ideal for feeding cables outside. If you are hanging cameras on or near the soffit, coming in through the attic and out the soffit is a pretty easy option — the hole is underneath the eave and water infiltration is less of an issue.
- Existing infrastructure: Use existing structures like gutters or downspouts to help conceal wires. Running wires through the attic, then down a hollow wall cavity and out through a recessed wall plate, keeps things neat and hidden.
- Above or below ground: Decide if any wires should be buried for better concealment. Some wires may run along eaves or external walls instead.

Drilling Through the Wall
When drilling from outside to inside for a wire, always drill the hole at a slight upward angle so water can't run along the wire into the house should the sealant fail. Do a small test hole through sheetrock from inside, use a stud finder and power finder if you have them, and measure carefully inside and outside to plan where your drill bit will pop through. Drill slow and deliberate.
- Use a stud finder and power finder to locate and avoid studs, power lines, and water pipes.
- Drive a screw through the sheathing and siding to the outside, then use that screw hole to start your paddle bit, making the hole large enough for the conduit or cable.
- Drill at a slight upward angle so water cannot run along the wire and into the house.
- If running cable down the outside wall to the hole, clip it slightly lower than the hole — about an inch — then carry it back up, creating a drip loop so water runs past the hole rather than into it.
- Use a fiberglass rod to fish your cable through gently.
- Seal the hole with silicone caulk or duct seal putty. Duct seal putty is preferred as it does not need to be redone after a few years the way caulk does.
- Be mindful of the elements affecting plugs and connections. Electrical tape works well to protect in most cases — wrap cable connections starting at the bottom and working up, like installing roofing shingles.

Securing and Protecting Wires Outdoors
To maintain functionality over time, protect your cables from environmental damage and tampering.
- Conduit: Use outdoor-rated PVC or metallic conduit to shield cables. Conduit keeps wires safe from moisture, UV rays, and physical damage. Flexible conduit can be harder for intruders to cut.
- Weatherproofing: Ensure all cable connections are sealed to prevent moisture ingress. Use weatherproof RJ45 connectors and apply silicone sealant around entry points to keep water out. Also put a dab of silicone caulk around the USB port after you've plugged in the cable, if applicable.
- Cable staples: Fasten cables neatly along walls or eaves using cable staples with rubber linings. This prevents over-tightening and protects the wire from damage. Do not use metal staples, which can pierce insulation.
- Wire guards: For overhead wires, consider low-profile wire guards. These offer abrasion protection and reduce visibility.
- Nylon cable anchors: There are nylon cable anchors that you can nail into walls, used for round TV antenna cable. Do not let wiring hang for long lengths without support because that can strain wires and connectors enough to tear them.
Concealing Wires for Aesthetic Appeal
A neat installation not only looks better but also reduces the chance of tampering.
- Wire guards and camouflage: Paint wire guards to match your home's exterior. This simple trick makes wires blend in with the surroundings.
- Underground burial: For a truly hidden setup, bury cables at least one foot underground using protective tubing. This method protects against environmental factors and tampering.
- Existing infrastructure: Run wires along gutters, downspouts, or existing conduits to help disguise them and make the installation look seamless.
- Junction boxes: Install a low-voltage (LV) plate at a single gang box opening cut at the camera mount location. When moving out, a standard 1-gang blanking plate can plug the hole for the next owner.
Troubleshooting Common Wiring Issues
Once your security camera system is set up, you might encounter some common wiring issues.
- Connectivity issues
- Use a cable tester to quickly identify any connectivity issues. Insert each end of the ethernet cable into the tester. If the wires are properly connected, the tester will show continuity across all lines. If not, check for loose or improperly crimped connections. If the cable tester indicates a problem, re-terminate the RJ45 connectors — trim the wires to the correct length, insert them into a new connector, and crimp securely.
- Damage and wear
- Visually inspect your cables for any signs of damage such as cuts or abrasions. If you find any, replace the damaged section. Moisture can seep into poorly sealed connections, causing corrosion and signal loss. Ensure all connections are weatherproofed with silicone sealant and use weatherproof connectors to keep moisture out.
- Weak signal over long cable runs
- If your cameras are far from the NVR or PoE switch, consider installing a signal booster. A PoE injector or PoE switch can increase the distance by up to 328 feet. Test segments of the cable at various points along the run to pinpoint specific areas of concern.
Extending PoE Range
Some customers wire their security camera systems with a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch so that their ethernet cables can connect their security cameras to power over greater distances. These devices can increase the range of power transmission by up to 328 feet. A PoE switch is needed for 24-camera systems and above. With systems of up to 16 cameras, network video recorders come with a built-in PoE switch and are connected directly to the back of the recorder. If the distance from the camera to the network video recorder is too long, you will use a PoE injector or PoE switch to bridge the gap.
