select the loopback device

- select the output you want to use (the device you're using to listen) as the input. it will be marked with a (loopback) after it's name.
- when using the (default) mme device, you may find a virtual microphone called stereo mixwhat you hear or similar in it. this also will record your desktop audio.
check if everything is set up correctly

- enable the recording meter by selecting start monitoring.
- don't use software playthroughtransport > transport options > software playthrough (on/off)✔️checkmark next to it must be turned off. you can turn off overdub here as well.
- ensure audio is playing first when recording desktop audio as although wasapi can record a silent audio stream it can’t record when there’s no audio stream.
record audio from computer with stereo mix or what u hear

- ensure that “stereo mix” or “what u hear” is enabled in the sounds window, then open your recording application and select “what u hear” or “stereo mix” for the source. if you don’t have stereo mix, use windows wasapi to record your pc’s audio in an application like audacity.
- if this doesn't work, you may also need to select the correct number of recording channels to match your device using the dropdown box to the right of the device selection box. for example, if you have a 7.1 channel headset, select "8."
use audacity's wasapi loopback to record computer audio

- audacity can do this. you’ll see an input option. set it to system audio
- audacity is much easier than some of the other things being suggested. just go with that. use the wasapi input setting
- audacity took me a bit to set up to do it the first time but has been easy since.
macos desktop audio recording
- note: macos does not have built-in desktop audio recording capabilities. you'll need to download soundflower to record desktop audio.
- caution: soundflower is not compatible with apple silicon-based machines ("m1", "m2", ...)

- in the panel that appears to the right, select built-in outputsoundflower (2ch).
- press the gear button in the bottom left and select "use this device for sound output".note: if you don't set an option, you won't hear anything after completing the following steps.
- click the audio setupsoundflower (2ch) as the recording device.

- in the capture from dropdown, select the "monitor" option of the playback device used by the application you want to record from
- launch the application that you wish to record and begin playback.
- in the "recording" tab of pulseaudio volume control, drag the volume sliders so that the recording level in audacity's recording meter is to left of 0 db (-6 db is a good level to aim for).

- please grant screen recording permission and try again.
- it's suggested to use the desktop version for recording longer than 30mins, for you may fail to save extra long recordings online directly.
- sorry, our online audio recorder does not work with chrome os.
- yup, it can record any sound from your computer or even microphone without time limitation.
other audio recording software
- you could use obs and set up an audio-only scene to record your computer's output. this will create a video file, but you can just use some kind of video-->audio converter at that point to convert the filetype.
- ableton and fl can do this too.
- loop back audio. it's an digital internal audio router. free download but you can record only 20 min of highquality audio. after that you need to pay for the whole think. so far 20 min has been enough to get the sample i need
- loop back audio is correct. any audio recording software should support it in its hardware configuration menu.
- on mac: ground control, black hole and soundflower in that order of greatness. all free.
