Cameras that stream live video — like doorbell smart cameras, baby monitors, and security cameras — are a popular way to keep an eye on your property, family, and pets. These cameras may be called smart cameras, connected cameras, or IP cameras. Using an app on your phone or computer, you're able to watch or listen to live video and audio feeds, also known as livestreams. But these cameras can be hacked, so it's important to understand how to secure them.
How Wi-Fi Enabled Surveillance Cameras Get Hacked
Understanding how hackers gain access is the first step toward prevention. There are several known attack vectors:
- Unsecured IP cameras get peered into due to default passwords or lack of password protection.
- IP cameras that fail to support SSL/TLS encryption make video surveillance footage vulnerable to hackers.
- Users' lack of awareness of security between cameras and the router leads to Wi-Fi camera hack issues.
- Hackers use a technique called "clickjacking" to deceive people. Applications have HTML and CSS codes that create an almost invisible layer on files. This layer places an "allow" button near something the user can click, such as a "play" button, so when the user chooses to close or play content, they are actually permitting someone to access their webcams and IP cameras.
- Wi-Fi cameras connect to your home router on the 2.4GHz frequency. A device called a "de-authentication" jammer floods that frequency with interference and forces your camera offline. Once the camera loses its Wi-Fi signal, it can't send alerts, and it can't save footage to the cloud.

Your home security cameras provide peace of mind, but it's equally important to ensure that your Wi-Fi network is secure to keep everything running smoothly and privately. The following measures address the most critical network-level vulnerabilities:
- Change the default router login information
- Routers often come with default usernames and passwords that are easy to find online. Changing these credentials is one of the most basic, yet effective, ways to protect your network.
- Use a strong Wi-Fi password
- A strong password for your Wi-Fi network makes it much harder for anyone to access your network without your permission.
- Enable WPA3 encryption
- Encryption ensures that any data sent over your network stays private. WPA3 is the most secure encryption method available for Wi-Fi today.

- Pick a strong password for your cameras and don't use the default ones that come with them.
- If your camera offers two-factor authentication, turn that on for extra security.
- Most cameras come with built-in security features like encryption and firewalls — make sure these are turned on.
- Check for firmware updates regularly, and turn on automatic updates whenever you can. Manufacturers regularly release updates that improve security.
- Choose cameras with strong security encryption. For example, some cameras use WPA3 as the security encryption standard.
- Make sure your camera feed is encrypted, and only let trusted devices and accounts access it remotely.

Network Access Control and Monitoring
Additional router-level controls can further restrict who and what can reach your cameras:
- MAC filtering: Enable MAC address filtering in your router settings, allowing only devices that you've approved to connect. This ensures that even if someone has your password, they still won't be able to connect without an approved device.

- The first trick of staying secure is using PoE (Power over Ethernet) whenever possible. An isolated wired network is far more difficult to hack than a generic Wi-Fi access point.
- Cellular trail cameras connect through mobile networks — the same encrypted cellular bands your phone runs on. There's no home router involved, meaning a de-auth jammer has nothing to target. To interfere with a cellular camera, a burglar would need military-grade equipment that costs thousands and attracts serious legal attention.
- Even if a burglar uses a wide-spectrum jammer that takes out both Wi-Fi and cellular signals, a camera with local SD storage keeps recording. It doesn't need a signal to write footage to a card sitting inside it.
- Cloud-only cameras like Nest and Ring are built around the assumption that your internet is always on, so the moment that connection is lost, they stop working.
- A separate network for security cameras makes it easier to swap out to a new router and isolates camera traffic from the rest of your devices. Don't give out that network to guests — make a guest account and use it for guests instead.
Camera Placement and Physical Security
Physical placement affects both the quality of footage captured and the difficulty of tampering with cameras:
- Place cameras high enough to prevent someone from easily grabbing them, but not so high that facial detail is lost. Roughly 2.5 to 3.5 metres works well for most setups.
- Visible cameras with signage are a deterrent on their own. Most opportunistic criminals will move on when they see active surveillance.
- Check SD cards regularly. Footage stored locally is only useful if you can retrieve it. Monthly checks during property rounds keep things in order.
- Avoid cheap cameras with known, unfixed security vulnerabilities. Some manufacturers have known security vulnerabilities that they refuse to fix.
- Avoid subscription cloud cameras that require an internet connection to function even when not using cloud storage, may save private footage, and can share it with law enforcement without a warrant.
